New California Recycling Bill Signed by Governor Brown

California Recycling Law for Apartment TenantsLandlords in California who have rental properties with 5 or more apartments are now required to supply recycling containers to their tenants.

In the past, tenants were responsible for carting their own recyclables to the nearest recycling center but that posed difficult for those without transportation or those who simply did not want to go to the centers by themselves.

Beginning in 2012 landlords now have to supply bins at their apartment buildings to handle the sorting of paper, plastic and cans. With apartment tenants in California, the recycling rate is a mere 15% because there is no recycling service available at apartment buildings.

In addition to obtaining the proper recycling containers, landlords are also required to formulate a recycling policy in their building. If they are unable to create a plan, the recycling companies have incentives to help the building owners make a recycling plan work.
