Unfortunately you have to protect your computer network from cybercriminals who don’t want to work hard for their money. They’d rather take the easy way out by using spam, phishing scams, or illegitimate websites to steal YOUR money. Cybercriminals can infect our computers and turn them into “bots” to work for them instead of working for us.
These online criminals are too smart for their own good. Not only can they create programs to steal banking information, but they can also steal identity info, from both you and your tenants if you store that information on your computer. They can also steal your social networking passwords and access to any business plans or products you have in the works.
The first step of protection is to make sure that your antivirus software is up to date as well as all of your main programs. Cybercriminals have a tendency to keep aware of the updates more than regular computer owners do. The criminals will do their best to figure out when a computer is vulnerable.
If you find out that your computer has been invaded disconnect it from your business network, transfer your valuable information to another good hard drive, and clean out the first computer. There are free programs to check if your computer is already infected, to help you clean out the bot, and even to prevent a second hostile takeover.
Their goal is to attack the computer of a small to medium size business, insert a bot, and have your computer make money in their botnet. It’s a slimy business model, but it’s a profitable business for them.
